She deserved something X3 Feedback is luffed!<br /><br /><a name="cutid1"></a><br />The rain pitter-pattered erratically against the deck. Little drops splashed into the wood and sent pieces of themselves flying across, creating a nice, sleek surface. It had been going on for hours, in the calm quiet that always came with a gentle shower. The taste of freshness was all around, the freshness of rain.<br /><br />He sat on that porch, just out of reach of the bouncing water, though his toes were a little damp. Just sitting, sitting, watching that mist fall from the sky, across the yard and into the wilderness that surrounded that place. It was a pleasant haze that he could not quite get into words, though the sharpie marker tapped against the slightly soggy notebook paper.<br /><br />Normally, Ryuichi would have sighed in frustration of his writer’s block. Nittle Grasper had a deadline, but he’d decided to take a little vacation to ‘foster his imagination’, as he had told his band mates earlier. However, no such songs had come. Ryuichi had a few, but nothing he was in love with and connected to.<br /><br />He loved the rain. He wanted a song to rain like that water.<br /><br />“Mm, it’s hard to think that just last week it was snowing.”<br /><br />Ryuichi looked over his shoulder to the new voice with child-like eyes. Then he smiled at the man, constantly in that grey yukata, the color he supposedly saw the world in. Ryuichi didn’t believe a word of it, but he wasn’t one to tell. Ryuichi also thought the outfit was pretty cute too, but he kept that to himself as well.<br /><br />“Na~ but the rain is nice too, Shigure-kun,” Ryuichi said happily, turning back to the view as he hugged his damp notebook to his chest.<br /><br />Shigure made a dramatic shivering notion, shaking his head a bit. “It’s nice, but it’s nicer when you look at it through a window. Close the door, Ryuichi! It’s warmer in here and you’re letting all the hot air out,” but he spoke good-naturedly with the eternal patience one needed when dealing with Sakuma Ryuichi.<br /><br />To that, Ryuichi just pouted. “But that’s no fun…” He kept his gaze to the wet ground, watching the dirt and grass bend down to the mercy of the pounding rain. Suddenly the singer dumped his notebook and sharpie, jumping off the deck and out into the downpour, laughing highly.<br /><br />Shigure had a moment of panic, “Ryuichi!!” He knew very well that the singer could take care of himself, but catching a cold during vacation just plain sucked. “Ryu, you’re going to catch a cold if you stay out there!” But Ryuichi just giggled madly.<br /><br />He ran out in his bare feet, splashing into the puddles that were forming and dancing in the rain. Water went everywhere, soon causing Ryuichi’s brown and high-lighted hair to stick to his face, clothes beginning to sag and cling to his body. But he didn’t notice one bit of it. He just kept soaking in the feeling of cool, fresh rain falling from the sky and washing him clean of his sins.<br /><br />For a moment the dark-haired man just watched in the quiet of the winter rain. Then ever so slowly, Shigure stepped off the platform and onto the soft, soggy earth, not seeming to mind that his feet were becoming covered in mud as he walked. Ryuichi paused as he came down from a happy jump, completely soaked as a dryer hand came on his shoulder. He turned around just in time to meet the lips of the taller man, and returned the kiss happily.<br /><br />After a few minutes they were both soaked to the bone, and chilled. Ryuichi smiled up at Shigure before jumping on him, clinging like a kid wanting to be put in the seat of a shopping cart. He kissed the tip of the other man’s nose as he felt arms coming down to support his bum, then sneezed to the side. Shigure sighed.<br /><br />“I told you~”<br /><br />“Yeah, yeah~” Ryuichi said with a pout, before snuggling and pretending he was warm and inside rather than under the mercy of the downpour. He loved rain, but maybe it was time to go inside. Shigure seemed to be reading his mind and walked back the house, walking carefully up the steps with his load before setting it down on its own two feet again.<br /><br />Ryuichi shuffled his stuff back together, still dripping with rainwater. Shigure chuckled and wrung out some of the moisture from his yukata, though it didn’t do too much. They’d probably both have to change.<br /><br />“Hmmm, do you have any coffee, no da~?” the singer asked, standing up straight and looking hopeful. The novelist shook his head, but smiled cheerfully.<br /><br />“No, but we have some excellent green tea. You change and I’ll go make some,” Shigure said, making a move to go back inside. But Ryuichi just stood on the porch for a minute, looking out into the wilderness drenched in rain once again.<br /><br />“Someone once asked...’What does snow become when it melts?’” Shigure asked, giving the other man a side-ways glance. Then he laughed a little, cross his arms as he leaned against the side of the door. “Someone once told me that it becomes spring. That’s pretty silly, isn’t it? Yes, pretty, very pretty, but naïve,” he said more melancholically, though there was still a smile on his face.<br /><br />Ryuichi turned to look at him for a minute, hair drooping and looking old but young at the same time.<br /><br />“I was going to say it turns into water, the lakes and ponds and rivers and oceans,” he said with a shrug. “But when it runs across the earth in streams, it’s like the world’s crying.” He smiled. “But rain is like crying, right? And rain washes everything away, it makes everything clean and not dirty anymore.”<br /><br />There was silence for a moment as Ryuichi continued smiling. Shigure found himself wondering why that interpretation made much more sense to him…<br /><br />The singer laughed and bounced inside past the other man, making a trail of wet wherever he went. He was humming loudly to himself, already making his way to the stairs to go change. The novelist stared at the trail of water drops from their path from the door and out of the room, then laughed.<br /><br />“…Maybe someday, the rain will clean me too. I've been neglecting this jouranl for a while due to a busy schedule and constant "I'll do it tomorrow"-ness XD But I'm back! I've decided to expand my horizons, however, so you'll find more stuff than GW on this page now (amazing!). It is also the rive that Achilles' mother dipped him into to make him nearly invincible. It does have a purpose in this story, but that will remain a mystery for a while. Since I have to mold this to the limits of my personal researach on Greek Mythology and Ancient Greece, the peoples there, etc. this may not be 100% historically correct, as even things I know I must bend to the will of my fic to make it work. Please forgive!<br /><b>Summary:</b> Sparta is on the move again, taking on larger, stronger enemies. A certain battle, however, ends up changing the fate of the Empire, sending an already war-smitten place in a never-ending struggle with another powerful nation, and prehaps, the Gods themselves.<br /><br /><b>Chapter II</b><br /><br /><a name="cutid1"></a><br /><br />The stretch of beautifully tanned sand seemed to stretch on for eternity. Water of the deepest blue crashed against the shores, lapping at the earth like it was hungry. Ships had long since left those ports, traveling to a distant land, seeking a trading treaty. The wind blew strongly strong for what was otherwise a peaceful day. It did not bode well for the high priests.<br /><br />“The air is ominous.”<br /><br />“You just feel insecure because Treize is not with us right now.”<br /><br />“No, there’s something…not right.”<br /><br />Limestone walls towered above the sea below. Two figures stood on the high balcony of Cydonea’s palace estate. One looked out to the Northwest, blue eyes drained and worried. His companion was ignoring the water for the moment, concentrating all of their gaze on him.<br /><br />“You need to learn not to worry so much, Quatre,” the other young man said, looking away.<br /><br />The slightly shorter blonde man smiled softly at that, lowering his eyes just a bit to watch the sea. “So I’ve been told.” A hand was placed on his shoulder, causing him to turn around.<br /><br />“Don’t let worrying eat you alive. I don’t know what Treize, myself, or this country would do without you.” A smile. “There’s somewhere I have to be. I’ll speak with you later tonight.”<br /><br />And he left.<br /><br />Quatre sighed, returning his gaze back to the horizon. There was a feeling of forewarning prickling up his spine, one that he did not wish to ignore. He loved the land and it’s people. A bird flew overhead, making a turn above the water to land somewhere on the beach. Yes, he loved that land. Maybe that was part of the reason he felt so nervous.<br /><br />----------------------- <br /><br />“The moral of this army has gone down since the Queen’s announcement,” he commented dryly, obviously displeased. Green eyes that seemed to be walled by stone carefully scrutinized the troops as the boats were loaded. Creta was not very far away. They would be there within a day or two if weather bid well. That was what worried him the most.<br /><br />The commander scowled, refusing to reply.<br /><br />Three days seemed to pass rather quickly, yet Heero had found himself not feeling very prepared. He spent most of the mentioned three days planning with his General and the Queen of his Empire. He was feeling restless.<br /><br />His companion looked away, watching a pair of soldiers carry a crate or rations onto one of their boats.<br /><br />“Do you think we will succeed, Heero?”<br /><br />He snorted, finally casting a glance to the taller man next to him. “What I think and feel has nothing to do with the outcome of this voyage. I am simply doing what Queen Dorothy thinks is best for our Empire.”<br /><br />Trowa rolled his eyes but did not respond. The two men commanded separate regiments of the Graecian military, both equal in military status by the age of twenty-two. Heero was easily far more well known as the man with the spirit of Ares, yet Trowa was a responsible and well-respected commander amongst his troops as well.<br /><br />“I think that it’s a worthwhile expedition,” Trowa went on, taking a step forward, armor gleaming in the morning sunlight. Heero watched him out of the corner of his eye. “Not that I consider myself a warmonger or a land hungry man, but I do think that the Empire itself will be much safer if Creta is no longer a threat. We would benefit from their military power as well.”<br /><br />Heero took a moment to contemplate. “I see. A necessary precaution, nothing more.” Which is what he hoped it would be. He had no desire for extra land, wealth, or the glory of a soldier. He wanted to protect the people he knew and the country he came from. That was all.<br /><br />“They say we are to take no hostages.”<br /><br />Heero was silent.<br /><br />----------------------- <br /><br />The water was calm that night. Heero stood at the bow of his ship, staring off into the dark blue distance. The world was drenched in a navy dye, the waters virtually black. But it was calm. Stars scattered the sky as he looked up, the wind barely tussling his hair.<br /><br />Yes, Poseidon was allowing them through this time. Yet he questioned if the Gods knew their intent. Shaking his head, he threw off the thought. Of course they did, the Gods knew what they were planning. And if the Gods were allowing it, Queen Dorothy must be right.<br /><br />That was what he told himself in the dark of the night. Salty water splashed onto his face, his loose cloth garments hanging onto his frame.<br /><br />Yes, Queen Dorothy must be right.<br /><br />----------------------- <br /><br />The expanse of diamonds strung across the velvet sky gave him something to look at, something to distract himself from those thoughts. Something around his heart ached. It had for a day or so now, yet every cure or pain reducer he had tried had not worked. Quatre was beginning to think the Gods were punishing him for something.<br /><br />“Mm…Quatre?”<br /><br />The blonde turned around, looking back into the large bedchamber. Silky fabrics that covered the entrance to the balcony swayed gently in the breeze, causing the dimly lit room inside to have an almost exotic appearance. A few candles flickered inside, causing the room’s only recipient to cast various shadows across the walls. Quatre walked towards the entrance.<br /><br />“Yes?”<br /><br />“Come back to bed…” the Prince drawled lazily before turning on the bed to face him.<br /><br />He looked worried for a moment, hesitant. The Prince propped his head up on the back of his hand, raising an eyebrow to his friend.<br /><br />“Something’s not right.”<br /><br />“So you’ve said…”<br /><br />“I really mean this. You know I’m not one to warn without reason,” he explained almost defensively. Blue-violet eyes blinked a few times, trying to keep themselves open. The Prince shook his head.<br /><br />“I’m not saying you’re lying. We’re on guard, like you suggested. Don’t worry about such things right now…” He lay back down on his back and closed his eyes. Quatre watched him for a moment before blowing out the last few candles.<br /><br />----------------------- <br /><br />Some say it was the will of the Gods, others say that the Graecians just had luck. They made good time, with their fleet of 600 ships. It was said that that many ships itself was their sign of precaution towards the Cretans, as the island they were trying to attack did not have that many boats in the harbor, with Treize away.<br /><br />The morning of the second day was when they saw land, Creta, to be exact. It was like something of a dream, the sun rising from behind the land and casting an ethereal glow on the city it sat on, as well as the water around them.<br /><br />But the sun was red.<br /><br />----------------------- <br /><br />Horns went out throughout the city. Behind the high walls of the palace, they echoed almost deafeningly. Guards and soldiers alike ran about, spreading the word quickly. Luckily, the hustle and bustle of the day had not yet started, but everyone in Cydonea was being awoken to the threat.<br /><br />The blonde boy ran with abandon down the polished hallways, avoiding other bodies rushing past him. The hysteria itself sent a pounding in his blood, which resonated with his pound of fist against the door.<br /><br />“It’s the Graecians!” Quatre shouted, the doors finally opening. Inside the room were the priests, military commanders, court advisors, and current Prince. His words silenced whatever conversation they were having. “The Graecians,” he reiterated, “They’re here! It’s their fleet!” A loud rush of voices quickly followed. An elderly man silenced them.<br /><br />“I don’t understand,” the older man, dressed in the robes of a high priest, said with wrinkles in his forehead. Worry and confusion became his entire being. “We have never been hostile towards the Graecians. Why would they come to us now?”<br /><br />Someone interrupted, another member of the military. “Maybe it isn’t a declaration of war! Perhaps they come in peace? King Treize left with many ships as well-“<br /><br />“Not armed ships, Commander!” Quatre interrupted, almost stomping his way over. He felt as if the power of the Gods were running through his veins. That feeling from before, he felt it again. Sparta was to the Northeast. He had known all along, and done nothing about it. “I saw the sails and the freshly polished swords reflecting the sunlight! The Queen’s ship is not among them
